Ranulph Fiennes began his long search for the lost city of Ubar - described by Lawrence of Arabia as 'the Atlantis of the Sands' - when,after expulsion from the SAS,he was fighting Communists in Oman in 1968.At first,his military commitments made forays into the sands difficult,and then the need to raise considerable sums of money became an obstacle.International competition to be the first person to reach the North Pole on foot postponed the Ubar search further,and success in the bitterly cold Arctic race became a necessary precursor to the setting up of the Ubar endeavour.
With help from space technology,NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and old Bedu acquaintances from his anti-communist-fighting days,Fiennes and his international team followed historical clues that involved Ptolemy,Marco Polo and the Queeen of Sheba.A fascinating trail through jungles,subterranean tunnels and the hottest deserts on earth finally led, in 1991,to the discovery of Ubar,the Atlantis of the Sands,and the opening of a whole new fragment of the history of the world.
